Email marketing
EditBuilding an audience you actually own — the only marketing channel that survives every algorithm change, platform shutdown, and tax-policy shift.
What this skill unlocks
Email is the single most-owned marketing channel. Algorithm changes can destroy your YouTube channel, X account, or affiliate site overnight. A 5,000-person email list survives all of those — you can migrate platforms in an hour and your audience comes with you. Email is anti-fragile.
The economic reality: a 5K engaged subscriber list is worth $500-2,000/month in monetization (sponsorships, affiliate, your products). A 50K engaged list is $10K-30K/month. The gap between “1K subs” and “50K subs” is mostly time + consistency, not magic skill — but the writing skill compounds the rate dramatically.
For TierIncome readers, email is the connective tissue between every other idea: your affiliate site captures emails → you sell digital products → you launch a paid newsletter → you become a recognized expert in the niche.
What “competent” looks like
You’re competent when you can:
- Set up a list in 30 minutes (Kit or Beehiiv free tier) with a working opt-in form.
- Write a 5-email welcome sequence that takes a stranger from “just subscribed” to “knows what I do, why I’m credible, and what I sell.”
- Send a weekly issue that gets 30%+ open rate and 2-5% click rate.
- Diagnose subject lines, send times, and content density to improve those rates.
- Monetize without burning the list — affiliate links, your own product, sponsorships at scale.
Steps 1-3 take ~30 hours and a few months of weekly sending. Steps 4-5 take 6-12 months of real list management.
How to actually practice
You can’t practice email marketing without an audience. The chicken-and-egg loop:
- Pick a niche narrow enough to have a clear opinion about.
- Set up a free list (Kit or Beehiiv). 0 subscribers is fine.
- Write 5 issues to nobody first — pure practice. Get the format right.
- Then ship publicly. Twitter/LinkedIn/Reddit/wherever your audience hangs.
- 30-100 subscribers in 90 days is realistic for honest niche-focused content.
- Don’t pivot before issue 30. The rhythm matters more than any single issue’s quality.
The trap: people read about email marketing for 6 months and never start a list. Set one up today; you can refine the strategy after issue 5.
Where to apply it on TierIncome
- Paid newsletter — email is the entire business.
- Niche affiliate sites — list capture turns one-time visitors into recurring revenue (3-5× LTV uplift).
- Sell digital products on Gumroad — without an email list, every Gumroad launch is a one-time event.
- Solo Consulting / Freelancing — public newsletter is the lead-gen engine for senior freelancers.
- YouTube AdSense (Niche Channel) — survives algorithm shifts by routing traffic to email.
Honest realities
- List size lies. 5K engaged subs > 50K dormant ones. Email platforms reward engagement (open rates) with deliverability. Buy/swap lists at your peril.
- Spam filters are stricter in 2026. Apple Mail Privacy Protection inflates open rates. Gmail’s 2026 sender requirements (DMARC, list-unsubscribe headers) demote senders that don’t comply. Set up SPF/DKIM/DMARC properly day 1.
- Newsletter ≠ email marketing. A weekly newsletter is one form. Welcome sequences, segment-based campaigns, abandoned-cart automations are others. Don’t conflate the two.
- AI-generated newsletter copy reads as such. Subscribers who pay $5-50/month for a newsletter pay for YOUR voice. Use AI for research and structure; final words are yours.
If you set up a Kit or Beehiiv list this week + ship 25 issues over 6 months + read Justin Welsh’s daily emails for 30 days, you’ll be in the top 5% of email operators by skill. The remaining variable is consistency over years — which most people can’t sustain. That’s the real moat.
